Concerns were raised over photos of a police dog used by the Manila Police District-Explosives and Ordinance Division (MPD-EOD) to assist in an explosive investigation in Tondo on Sunday.

Some Filipinos shared photos posted by The Philippine STAR on Sunday, August 3 about an explosion that injured four individuals at the corner of Tayuman and Dagupan Streets in Tondo, Manila.

The images also showed a K9 dog at the scene.

Its body build immediately caught the attention of some online users, who expressed concern about its thin appearance.

“Poor K9 dog, all work no food,” a Filipino on Reddit said.

“Isn’t this considered animal abuse? Inaalipin ‘yung aso, tapos hindi man lang maalagaan,” another Redditor commented.

“The dog is clearly emaciated. Shame on you, PNP, City of Manila! You’re letting this dog work, and for what? Have some decency,” a different Reddit user.

“The well-being of a working dog is crucial — they need proper nutrition, veterinary care, and adequate rest to do their job. If you can’t feed a dog, you shouldn’t have a K9 unit. This is absurd,” the user added.

“Working Belgian Malinois are on the fit side, but this is underweight. Kitang-kita mo na rin ‘yung buto sa hind legs,” another Redditor wrote.

“First look, akala ko nagre-rescue sila ng stray dog. That’s how the K9 looks like. Poor dog. Baka mas nakakakain pa ‘yung mga strays kesa sa kanya,” a different Pinoy said.

Law enforcers use dogs to help detect drugs and explosives. These canines are trained to recognize the scents of illegal substances like cocaine and marijuana, as well as common chemicals found in bombs.
