Filipinos’ reading comprehension was highlighted after a social media user noticed Pinoys’ comments on an automobile manufacturer’s Facebook post.
A Facebook user shared his observation about a certain post of Ford on November 8 which announced a test drive event that included the phrase: “It’s time to SAY YES.”
“Ready to say YES to cash discounts up to Php 100,000?” it said.
The post was accompanied by a graphic that had a big font for the “SAY YES” phrase.
A Facebook user noticed some Pinoys filling the comments section with “Yes” even though there were no indications in the post that they should write such.
He shared the observation in a group, which has since earned over 160 laugh reactions.
A look at Ford’s post shows that at least four Facebook users have commented “Yes.”
“Kala nung mga nag-comment, ‘pag nag-comment sila ng YES, mananalo sila nung kotse. Eh mukhang ‘di naman raffle post. Year-End Sale meaning,” another Facebook user said in response to the one who noticed the comments.
Results of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) test in 2022 revealed that the Philippines landed at the bottom of 10 out of 81 countries in terms of reading comprehension and mathematics and science.
After being ranked the lowest out of 79 participating countries in 2018 in reading comprehension, the Philippines was ranked 76th out of 81 countries for 2022.
Indicators of the test, however, showed that despite moving up the rank, the performance of top-performing students in the country did not go up in percentage points, while low-performing students registered a 4.3 percent decline in reading comprehension proficiency levels.
The PISA, developed by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, measures 15-year-olds’ ability to use their reading, mathematics and science knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges.
