“Beshy, birthday mo rin ba?”

This was what the management of the Light Rail Transit-Line 2 (LRT-2) asked in a social media post where it announced a treat for those celebrating their birthdays this month.

The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) is giving lucky commuters unlimited free rides on the Purple Line for two weeks in celebration of its 43rd anniversary on July 12, 2023.

The initiative is named the “Birthday Ko Rin Beshy” contest where commuters have to be a follower of the official LRT-2 Facebook page which has the username @OfficialLRTA.

Contest participants must also be born on July 12, 1980, the date of the LRTA’s creation as a government agency.

Qualified participants are required to do the following steps:

  • Comment their name in the Facebook post and include the “Birthday Ko Din Beshy” template (example: Juan dela Cruz, Birthday Ko Din Beshy)
  • Wait for LRTA’s message which will tell them where they can send their birth certification for verification of their birthdate

Participants can comment until July 13, Thursday.

The “Beshy (or Beshie) Ko” phrase is a meme template that came from a dialogue of GMA Network’s drama anthology “Magpakailanman“, particularly the “Baklash: The Viral Princesses of Navotas” episode.

The line was spoken by MJ Ortega to her friend, Lala Vilegenio.

“Ba’t malungkot ang beshie ko?” MJ asked while doing a cartwheel.

The scene gave birth to a new meme which was immediately embraced by some brands and entities in their promotional spots and materials.
