Filipino basketball fans cheered the return of Yeng Guiao as head coach of Rain or Shine, a team he brought to two championships in 2012 and 2016.

RoS announced Guiao’s comeback on Monday, September 5, a few days after the veteran  Philippine Basketball Association coach left the NLEX Road Warriors after handling the team for six years.

The 63-year-old coach replaced Chris Gavina. The latter will now serve as one of Guiao’s assistants.

Guiao’s return was welcomed by fans.

“Favorite Coach sa mga independent teams welcome back coach!” a Facebook user wrote

“Wow! welcome back coach Yeng! I’m sure the young guns will improve more under your wings. Go Rain or Shine!!” an online user said

“Naiiyak ako hahahaha TBH. Thank you for coming back, our beloved Coach!” a Facebook user wrote, wishing for the return of Jeff Chan and Paul Lee, former players of the franchise.

Others remembered Guiao’s coaching style when he handled RoS.

“Not much a fan of Guiao’s politics and his borderline verbally abusive antics, but he sure did restore some faith in independently-ran basketball in PH back in 2010’s. RoS was really great and had a system that could rival San Miguel and Alaska back then. This is good for the PBA,” a Twitter user shared

Only Gabe NorwoodBeau Belga, and Jewel Ponferrada remain in the RoS roster Guiao previously coached.

RoS fell short in the 2022 Philippine Cup, which San Miguel Beer dominated after beating TNT in Game 7, Sunday, September 4. The Painters placed ninth with four wins, and seven losses in the conference.
