The Philippines’ wrapped up its 2017 Southeast Asian Games on Wednesday in Kuala Lumpur, with the country coming up with its worst performance in the past 18 years.
The Philippines won a total of 24 golds, only good for sixth place behind Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and overall champion Malaysia which collected 145 golds.
The Philippines’ gold medal haul was the least since the 1999 SEA Games in Brunei where the country won 20.
The Filipinos also won 33 silvers and 64 bronzes for a total of 121 medals.
Among the highlights of the Philippines’ campaign were Gilas Pilipinas’ dominance in the basketball event, the hockey team which swept the tournament for a historic gold, track and field athlete Eric Cray, marathoner Mary Joy Tabal, and triathletes Kim Mangrobang and Nikko Huelgas.
After Malaysia, the biennial meet will be staged in the Philippines in 2019.
