FIBA on Thursday announced that the Philippines’ joint bid with Indonesia and Japan was included in the shortlist of host candidates for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
They are the only countries from Asia so far who are in the running to host the tournament. The field also includes joint bids by Russia and Turkey; and Argentina and Uruguay.
FIBA said that other nations who intend to host the tournament have until August to submit their bids.
This marks the Philippines’ second attempt at hosting the prestigious tournament after losing to China in the race to host the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
