Blackwater import Greg Smith showed up to the Philippine national men’s basketball team’s practice on Thursday night, and he didn’t hide his desire to become Gilas Pilipinas’ naturalized player if given the opportunity.

“It will be a blessing playing for these guys. They’re all good, the coaches are great,” said the 26-year-old former NBA veteran who worked out with the 12 pool members at the Meralco Gym.

“Team management (Blackwater) asked me if I want to be part of Gilas and I said, ‘Wow, why not?'” added Smith. “It’s an opportunity for me to perform with these guys, the best players in the country. Why not?”

Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes welcomed the presence of Smith, the second PBA import who graced the practices after TNT reinforcement Donte Greene.

“Before, we have Donte Green. We would like to work out with a lot of people, a lot of players if possible,” Reyes said. “Our priority are players who can play with June Mar (Fajardo), who can be on the floor with him.

“Obviously, we’re also very interested with Alex Stephenson but we think he will be essentially playing the same position with June Mar. The thing with Dontae and Greg is their ability to play with June Mar. What I like about him (Smith) is sila talaga yung nagsabi.”

Blackwater owner Dioceldo Sy is also more than willing to lend his import to the national team.

“This is a serious offer,” Sy said. “At least you have a back up if ever hindi pwede si (Andray) Blatche. I’m vouching for him. He has great working attitude. He told me if ever Gilas needs him, just tell him in advance.”

Reyes said the Gilas management plans to talk to Smith at the end of the SEABA Championship this May.

Gilas Pilipinas will be travelling to Cagayan De Oro, Lucena and Cebu next week to participate in the PBA All-Star Week where they will play in exhibition matches against PBA selections.
