Bishop Jose Elmer Mangalinao of Bayombong announced Wednesday that a court dismissed charges against him and other environmental advocates opposing a mining exploration project in Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya.

In a statement, he welcomed the ruling, calling it “a victory for truth, justice, and the collective efforts of communities who courageously stand to protect our land, water and future generations.”

“Today, we give thanks to God and to all of you. The court has dismissed the case filed against us and our fellow watershed defenders,” Mangalinao said.

He said the decision was more than a legal victory, describing it as an affirmation of the rights of communities working to protect natural resources and local livelihoods.

The bishop credited the legal team and supporters who stood with the environmental advocates throughout the case, saying their efforts helped defend not only individual rights but also environmental justice and the common good.

He said the dismissal should serve as a reminder that protecting watersheds, the environment and sources of livelihood is “not a crime.”

“It is a shared responsibility,” Mangalinao said.

The 66-year-old bishop said environmental defenders would continue their work through peaceful and lawful means.

“We hold no resentment toward anyone. Instead, we move forward with renewed commitment to peaceful advocacy, environmental stewardship and the protection of the sacred gift of creation,” he added.

“The struggle continues, but today we pause to thank God and all who stood with us… and every supporter who believed in our cause,” he also said.
