A Catholic bishop has appealed for “fair pricing of goods” amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
In a pastoral message on March 12, Bishop Julito Cortes of Dumaguete expressed solidarity with the concerns and struggles faced by the faithful, especially the marginalized.
“The rising cost of fuel and basic commodities now places an added burden on families, workers, farmers, fisherfolk, and those in the transport sector,” Cortes said.
“I appeal to all sectors of society to act with responsibility and compassion — especially in ensuring fair pricing of goods and in showing greater concern for the poor and the most vulnerable among us,” he added.
Cortes urged the faithful to continue praying fervently and to “trust in the Lord’s providence” with courage, hope and genuine Christian charity.
The prelate also called on parishes, Basic Ecclesial Communities, church organizations and ministries to deepen solidarity and extend assistance to those affected by the situation.
“Prayer must remain at the heart of our response,” he said, encouraging the daily recitation of the Holy Rosary for peace in the Middle East and throughout the world, as well as for Eucharistic Adoration, where “anxieties and hope are brought before the Lord.”
To avoid unnecessary alarm, Cortes reminded the public to “exercise prudence” in the use of social media and to rely only on “credible sources of information” regarding the ongoing conflict.
