All Masses in the Archdiocese of Cebu on Friday, Jan. 16, will be offered for the victims of a deadly landfill collapse.
In a social media post, the archdiocese said Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy directed all parishes to dedicate their Masses for the victims and their families.
“We ask all parishes in the Archdiocese to offer all Masses on this day for the victims of the tragedy and for the grieving families and loved ones,” the archdiocese said.
“May the Lord grant eternal rest to those who have died and comfort to those who mourn,” it added.
The Cebu City government earlier declared Jan. 16 a Day of Mourning following the deadly landfill collapse at the Prime Waste Solutions Cebu landfill in Barangay Binaliw on Jan. 8.
As of Wednesday, the death toll had risen to 18, while more than 18 others remained missing.
Uy earlier urged the faithful to continue praying for all those affected by the tragedy, including the injured and those still unaccounted for.
“Let us unite in prayer for our brothers and sisters affected by the landslide,” Uy told Radio Veritas.
He also called for prayers for rescue workers responding to the disaster.
“We also lift up in prayer the brave responders and rescuers who are working tirelessly on the ground, risking their own safety to save lives,” Uy said. “May God grant them endurance, wisdom and protection.”
