A Catholic bishop has urged the Armed Forces of the Philippines to remain steadfast in defending the Constitution amid what he described as “challenging times” for the nation.
In a letter dated Nov. 14 and addressed to AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., Bishop Elias Ayuban of Cubao said the diocese stands in solidarity with the military as it upholds democratic institutions.
“We stand firmly with you in the defense of our democratic institutions and the Filipino people, especially in these challenging times for our nation,” Ayuban wrote in the letter he personally delivered to AFP headquarters.
The bishop said the diocese values the military’s “steadfast commitment to preserving peace, order, and national unity” in accordance with justice and democratic principles.
He also assured the AFP of the Church’s pastoral support as tensions continue to shape the country’s political climate.
“We join you in praying for the peaceful and lawful resolution of the present situation our country faces,” Ayuban added.
The AFP earlier said it was taking seriously reports that certain individuals may attempt to disrupt protest actions with violence.
Brawner said the information was relayed to him and to the Philippine National Police ahead of a three-day rally led by the Iglesia ni Cristo at Manila’s Luneta Park beginning Sunday, Nov. 16.

“Do not expect the Armed Forces of the Philippines to engage in unconstitutional activities, nor will we resort to unconstitutional means to bring about change,” Brawner said.
“We will stick to the rule of law and we will not violate it. We will not stage a coup d’état, we will not form a military junta, because it is our country that will suffer if we do that,” he added.
