Focal Spirit Classic

Our rating:

“Almost perfect. Buy it now before you change your mind”

The gist:

The Focal Spirit Classic is a pair of closed back, circum-aural headphones aimed at audiophiles. It features a warm sound that deliver incredible detail through a pair of 40mm Mylar/Titanium 32 ohm dynamic transducers. Focal indicated that the Spirit Classic’s “sound tuning is perfect for listening at home: extended low end, a detailed mid-range and linear top end for a lighter, open sound”. Key features include: High-dynamic, faithful music reproduction, light cone (86 mg as against a market average of 110 mg), giving faster acceleration for more dynamic signal response; stiff, no-deformation cone dome for signal reproduction with no added distortion, optimal comfort and sound insulation.

The good:

Great sound quality
Build
Comfortable
Focal brand

The bad:

Focal Spirit Classic

Soft cloth protective pouch
Not for bass heads
Pricey

Our verdict:

You simply can’t go wrong with a Focal. For catering to audiophiles with impeccable taste in sound reproduction, the brand alone made France a proud country, while wearing their headphones will say a lot about your discerning choice of musical ware. Many may not know the brand, not yet, but for those who do, then you’re the man! With the Focal Spirit Classic, listening to Mozart’s Piano concerto n. No. 21 in C major, K.467 II Andante and Bach’s Air on the G String is pure heaven. Throw in Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon on the CD player and you’ll understand why the album is absolute headphone music. Definitely not for bass heads. Although David Guetta didn’t sound bad. Not bad at all. Nonetheless, if you’re that kind of music lover who wants to sit back in your favorite chair, in front of your well-invested stereo setup or maybe a portable digital audio player, listening to your favorite music with eyes closed and just be pulled away by the sound then this Spirit Classic should be part of your gear. The missing half-star rating is for the included soft cloth pouch pretending to be its protective case. It’s cheap and flimsy. Come’on Focal, for the price, you could do better than this.
