With the initial rollout of the Free WiFi project on June 12 by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), in conjunction with mobile service providers Smart Communications, Inc. and Globe Telecom, people of course are now asking: How fast is it?

Well, according to the local telcos, they will be providing up to 1Gbps per station, and on their speed tests, connected devices registered over 100Mbps connection speed.

In this real situation speed tests, however, BloombergTV PH reporter Bim Santos got these two connections today at the MRT-3 Shaw Boulevard Station in Mandaluyong coinciding with the Free WiFi Project inauguration:

The 9Mbps and 13Mbps download connections above were experienced within the MRT-3 Shaw Boulevard train station platform, while our friend reporter from The Manila Bulletin Robert “Bob” Reyes’ speed test below was registered right outside the station, not too far from the same platform:

The Free WiFi initiative is initially available at MRT-3 stations from Cubao in Quezon City to Guadalupe in Makati for Phase 1. While Phase 2, which will include all 13 MRT stations, will commence by end of August this year.

Both Smart and Globe said they can cater up to 1,000 concurrent users at the current stage.
