A new update to Ragnarok Origin Classic is putting social gameplay ahead of traditional monetization features, as its developers introduce a marriage system that does not affect character strength.

Launched on April 24, the “Sakura Vows” update adds wedding ceremonies, limited-time social activities and a new server, while avoiding stat-based advantages often tied to in-game purchases in similar titles.

According to developer Gravity Game Vision, the update is part of the game’s ongoing design approach.

“From day one, ROOC has stood by its promise of ‘grow with Monthly Pass only,’” the company said, adding that the new content is not linked to power or stat progression.

Marriage, a common feature in massively multiplayer online role-playing games, has been redesigned to emphasize cooperation rather than rewards.

“You get married because you want to adventure together, and not because it gives you extra stats,” the developer said.

The system introduces three types of ceremonies, Eternal Contract, Sakura Oath and Beyond the Stars, which vary in visual presentation but offer identical in-game benefits. The base ceremony is purchasable using in-game currency, rather than premium payment systems.

The update also includes additional social features, such as cooperative quests, a personality-based matchmaking system, and themed seasonal events set in a cherry blossom version of the in-game city Prontera. Limited-time rewards and cosmetics are available through participation in these activities.

A “Wedding Renewal” feature has also been added, allowing players to repeat ceremonies with friends and guild members, reinforcing what developers describe as a focus on shared experiences.

Beyond gameplay features, the update reflects a broader development approach. Producer Big Kitty has previously communicated plans and updates through public letters, with the studio stating that player feedback continues to shape content updates.

“Sakura Vows isn’t just another patch,” the developer said. “It’s another promise kept — proof that the principles set at launch are not short-term strategies, but long-term commitments.”

The update arrives as game developers face increasing scrutiny over monetization practices, with some players favoring systems that prioritize gameplay balance over paid advantages.
