It’s one thing to be a sought-after break dancer, and another thing to be a magician; but if you can do both, you have got to be something special.
Magical Bones has worked as a dancer for global superstars like the Black Eyed Peas and Madonna. And while Bones’ moves on the dance floor are nothing short of exciting, he has impressed the Queen of Pop in more ways than one.
“I’ve shown a trick to Madonna — a trick that involves rubber bands, and she liked it. She really enjoyed it,” Bones shared in a media interview for the Manila staging of the popular “Impossible” magic touring show.
Bones, who names Michael Jackson as one of his idols when he was younger, started his career in the entertainment industry as a dancer for pop and hip-hop artists. While on break in between shoots for music videos and during events, Bones would showcase his tricks for his peers, and eventually, his skills as a magician progressed. He incorporated back flips and break dancing into his tricks.
Bones looks up to street magician David Blaine and English magician Dynamo. He also admits that it could take a few years to master a magical trick, although he is now touted as the world’s best hip-hop magician. He mesmerizes audiences with exemplary sleight-of-hand.
“You can never be perfect, you can always improve,” he said. The South London street conjurer and break-dancing master also shared advice on how to find success in his chosen field.
“It’s all about practice, hard work and dedication. And maybe hours of staying in front of the mirror making sure you’ve got the slide and deck of the cards right, and things like that,” he said.
Bones says that being a magician and doing illusions are skills, but magic itself is a feeling of astonishment that magicians deliver.
He explains, “The word ‘magic’ for us is the feeling of astonishment, giving people a feeling of wonder and amazement. So as a magician, whenever you get people to feel amazed, that feeling they get, you also get from providing that. A sense of joy when I show you a trick and then, ‘wow!’ I’m happy for you just as you’re happy to see the trick.”
According to Bones, Filipinos have been warm and receptive during his visit, and he can only hope for the same — if not better — reception once he and the other magicians included in “Impossible” showcase their talents in Manila come Christmastime.
Magical Bones and five other magicians — Ali Cook, Chris Cox, Ben Hart, Josephine Lee and Bello Knock — are all set to blow your minds this holiday season. Fresh from its successful run at London’s West End, the world’s greatest magic show, “Impossible,” will be held at the Araneta Coliseum from December 25 to January 3.
