The mother of the artist formerly known as Charice thinks her own estranged mother was wrong to air her disapproval of the transgender singer’s recent decision to call himself Jake Zyrus.

Raquel Pempengco, Jake’s mother and former manager, said it is she, not Tess Relucio, who has the right to feel aggrieved because it was she who gave the name Charice to her child.

“Nabalitaan ko nagpa-interview at galit na galit. Pero kung meron dapat magalit e dapat ako yon dahil ako yung magulang at ako nagbigay ng pangalan kay Charice,” she told News5 in a phone interview on Tuesday.

Mommy Raquel has likewise been estranged from Jake for two years.

“Ewan ko ano kalaki ang nagawa kong kasalanan. Dahil kahit text na a, e, i, o, u e wala!” she lamented. She opposed his romance with Alyssa.

However, when she heard last month that Jake had broken up with singer Alyssa Quijano, his girlfriend of four years, Mommy Raquel tried to visit him in his home in Laguna.

“Nag-reach out naman ako sa kanya nung time na nabalitaan ko na naghiwalay sila. Syempre bilang magulang kahit wala silang komunikasyon sa ‘kin apektado rin ako na baka depressed o kailangan niya ako ngayon sa tabi niya,” she said.

However, Jake did not come out to see her.

Mommy Raquel said she wishes she could talk to the singer first before she could issue any statement regarding his name change.

She said Jake’s new manager, Carl Cabral, used to be a “Chaster,” the nickname for Charice fans.
