JAKARTA — Highlights of day four of the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang on Tuesday (times GMT):
China and Japan maintained a firm grip at the top of the medal table after another successful day in the swimming events at the Jakarta pool on Tuesday.

China notches second fencing gold
Chinese fencer Huang Mengkai has claimed the second fencing gold for China by defeating Choi Nicholas Edward of Hong Kong 11-10 in the men’s individual foil final.
The bronze medal went to semi-finalists Son Yong-Ki of South Korea and Cheung Ka Long of Hong Kong.
Qian Jiarui won China’s first fencing gold in the women’s individual sabre on Sunday.
Ikee continues gold rush
Japanese swimmer Rikako Ikee grabbed her fourth gold of the meet with victory in the women’s 100 meters butterfly.
China’s Zhang Yufei took silver for her first individual medal at the Games, while An Se-hyeon won bronze for South Korea.
Sun wins 400 m freestyle
China’s swimming sensation Sun Yang won his eighth Asian Games gold after storming to the finish line in the men’s 400 meters freestyle.
Yu grabs 50 m freestyle gold for China
China’s Yu Hexin swam to a convincing win in the men’s 50 metres freestyle gold medal ahead of Japanese duo Katsumi Nakamura and Shunichi Nakao.
China’s Liu breaks 50 m backstroke world record
China’s Liu Xiang broke the world record to open the third session of swimming as she clocked 26.98 seconds in the women’s 50 metres backstroke.
The 21-year-old topped the previous record of 27.06 seconds set by her compatriot Zhao Jing in 2009.
Dominant China clinch water polo gold
China extended their unbeaten run to 13 matches in women’s water polo at the Asian Games as they clinched their third consecutive gold medal.
They were crowned champions after a 16-3 victory over Hong Kong.
Lee fails to defend taekwondo gold
South Korea’s taekwondo fighter Lee Ah-reum failed to defend her title after she was beaten 6-5 by China’s Luo Zongshi in the 57kg category final.
Pauline Lopez of the Philippines and Vipawan Siripornpermsak of Thailand took bronze.
Irawan earns weightlifting gold for Indonesia
Rio Olympics silver medalist Eko Yuli Irawan claimed Indonesia’s first gold in weightlifting at the Asian Games, winning the men’s 62 kg category.
Vietnam’s Trinh Van Vinh took silver and Uzbekistan’s Adkhamjon Ergashev the bronze.
China win gold in shooting, mountain biking
Hui Zicheng won gold in the men’s 50m rifle three positions event. Earlier, Yao Bianwa was victorious in the women’s cross country mountain biking competition.
Indian shooter Chaudhary wins gold
Indian shooter Saurabh Chaudhary, 16, clinched a gold medal on his debut Games by winning the men’s 10m air pistol with a score of 240.7 points, a Games record.
Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsuda (239.7) led for most of the final but had to settle for silver. Another Indian, Abhishek Verma (219.3), took the bronze.
Balandin a no show but Sun, Ikee ease through
Olympic 200 metres breaststroke champion Dmitriy Balandin was a no show in the heats for the event at the Jakarta pool on Tuesday morning.
The 23-year-old has experienced a major dive in form since becoming Kazakhstan’s first Olympic champion in Rio two years ago but had still been expected to defend his 50m, 100m and 200m Asian Games titles.
In his absence, rising Japanese talent Ippei Watanabe topped the times in two minutes, 11.92 seconds ahead of China’s Yan Zibei and compatriot Yasuhiro Koseki.
China’s defending champion Sun Yang (3:49.13) was quickest in the heats of the men’s 400 metres freestyle, the event in which he was Olympic champion in 2012 and which offers him a chance of a third gold of the Games in the evening finals.
Sun’s compatriot Yu Hexin was quickest in the heats for the men’s 50m freestyle in 22.21 but Singapore’s Olympic butterfly champion Joseph Schooling failed to make the cut for the final, finishing 17th fastest in 23.05.
China’s Zhang Yufei edged Japan’s three-times Jakarta gold medallist Rakako Ikee in the heats for the women’s 100m butterfly with a time of 57.68.
Yui Ohashi (4.42.11) was first into the women’s 400m medley final with China’s Zhou Min second fastest. The two Asian swimming superpowers have so far evenly split the 14 gold medals up for grabs in the pool at the 18th Asian Games.
China claim two wushu gold medals
China got off to a winning start on Tuesday, clinching two gold medals in wushu. Teenager Wu Zhaohua won the men’s daoshu and gunshu all-round competition while Guo Mengjiao won the women’s jianshu and qiangshu all-round event.
Action begins on day four
The fourth day of the 18th Asian Games began with equestrian events on Tuesday. Medals are up for grabs in weightlifting, wrestling, swimming and shooting among other disciplines.
