A celebrity-backed candidate is the latest addition to President Rodrigo Duterte’s slate for the next elections. Cesar “Chet” Cuneta, brother of Megastar Sharon Cuneta, will run for mayor of Pasay City.

The actress announced her brother’s 2019 plans with ruling party PDP Laban in a sentimental post on Instagram.

This morning, I proudly accompanied my brother Chet as he registered at the Comelec. It took us many, many heart-to-heart talks throughout some time to finally come to this decision. And we made sure that when we came to it, it was with all our hearts and souls. Only with the spirit to serve honestly and with our father Pablo’s legacy in mind. Cesar “Chet” Cuneta is running for Mayor of Pasay City. I pray that if you are living in Pasay and reading this, I pray that God touch your heart and support him in these coming elections. I will be 110% behind him, beside him. He is giving up his 32 years of his career as a hard-working pilot to serve the people of Pasay City. He will make sure na ang lahat ng kikitain ng Pasay ay mapupunta sa pagpaganda, pagpapaunlad ng Pasay, at sa mga TAO NG PASAY. AKO MISMO AY KASAMA NIYANG MAGBABANTAY. God bless you all and thanks so much! We love you. Kuya Chet & Sharon.

In what appears to be a pre-campaign endorsement, Sharon vowed that her brother as mayor will not be corrupt, “with our father Pablo’s legacy in mind.” The late Pablo Cuneta was a former Pasay City mayor for 41 years.

“He will make sure na ang lahat ng kikitain ng Pasay ay mapupunta sa pagpaganda, pagpapaunlad ng Pasay, at sa mga tao ng pasay. Ako mismo ay kasama niyang magbabantay,” the Kapamilya actress-singer shared on Instagram.

A thorough decision

Sharon related in the post that her brother’s decision to run came after “many heart-to-heart talks.” Chet’s political aspiration, after all, meant he had to give up being a licensed pilot—his career for 32 years.

“It took us many, many heart-to-heart talks throughout some time to finally come to this decision. And we made sure that when we came to it, it was with all our hearts and souls,” the Kapamilya actress said on July 2.

Cesar’s brother-in-law, Liberal Party chief Sen. Kiko Pangilinan, said he wished him well despite being part of his rival party.
