K-Pop girl group BlackPink fires up internet and breaks online records

The craze for K-Pop is real as girl group BlackPink’s latest music video titled “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” has broken records on YouTube, iTunes and Spotify.

As of this writing, the official video has reached about 62 million views.

“Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” is the girl group’s single from their new EP, “Square Up,” released in June 15, 2018.

Reports indicate that BlackPink is the first K-Pop girl group to have held a “24-hour YouTube record” on the number one trending video list, with millions of views since its release.

It is also listed as the “fourth-highest 24-hour YouTube debut for a music video.”

In addition, it has reached 50 million YouTube views in less than three days since its debut—considered another record for a K-Pop girl group.

In June 15, the video reached a “certified all-kill” status, indicating that it had become number one on major Korean music sites and real-time charts.

It also broke the record for having the most number of top one placements in iTunes chart for a girl group.

The song was also the first K-Pop song of a girl group to enter the “Global Top 50” list of Spotify.

‘Chic and powerful’ women

BlackPink’s “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” was alleged to be filled with meanings.

According to Koreaboo, some of its themes based on the video’s particular sequences show perseverance, freedom, independence, celebration of self-love, spontaneity, fearlessness, strength, and determination.

The lyrics are thought to portray a “chic and powerful woman,” which equates to the girl group’s identity.

BlackPink is considered one of the most famous K-Pop girl groups and is composed of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa.

Some of their hit songs are “Boombayah,” “As If It’s Your Last,” “Whistle” and “Playing With Fire.”
