MANILA – United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Sunday morning on a commercial flight, as one of global leaders attending the 31st ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, which the Philippines is hosting as the regional bloc marks its 50th anniversary.
Guterres’ Cathay Pacific flight arrived at the NAIA Terminal 3 at 10:36 a.m.
The UN chief is one of two heads of international organizations invited to attend this week’s series of ASEAN events. European Council President Donald Tusk earlier confirmed participation in the summit also.
Guterres was welcomed at NAIA 3 by Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque and the Philippine Ambassador to the UN, Teodoro Locsin Jr.
Unlike the more colorful arrival rites that welcomed four ASEAN leaders who have since arrived at Clark International Airport this weekend, the arrival ceremony for the UN chief was subdued. – With a report by Camille Aguinaldo, InterAksyon
