Storm signals up as ‘Salome’ cuts west across country

MANILA, Philippines — (UPDATE – 11:39 a.m.) Tropical cyclone warning signal No. 1 has been raised over most of southern Luzon , including Metro Manila, and Eastern Visayas as the newly-formed tropical depression “Salome” crossed the Ticao Pass in Masbate to begin its westward traverse of the country late Thursday morning, November 9.

The storm waning, which means winds of 30-60 kilometers per hour are expected in 36 hours, is up over:

Late Thursday morning, Salome was tracked 50 kilometers south-southwest of Juban, Sorsogon packing winds of 55 kilometers per hour with gusts of up to 90 kph a it moved west at 25 kph. It is expected to cross the Sibuyan Sea Thursday afternoon.

Casiguran, Sorsogon Mayor Edwin Hamor ordered classes on all levels suspended in the town because of the storm.

With forecast rainfall within the storm’s 250-kilometer diameter estimated to be moderate to heavy, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration warned residents of areas under storm warning signals against possible flashfloods and landslides.

It also said sea travel is risky in these areas.

Salome is forecast to be 195 kilometers southwest of Iba, Zambales Friday morning and should exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Ssaturday morning, Pagasa said.

Earlier, Pagasa said Mindanao can also expect localized thunderstorms.
