War in Marawi has ended.
But its residents are just beginning to rebuild shattered lives.
Here are three ways that you can help them.
1. Attend Musikaramay Basketball: 3×3 Para sa Marawi on November 6, Monday, at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Musikaramay, short for “musika na nakikiramay” (music for solidarity), is a community of people from the music industry who want to be “real-life superheroes”.
For four years, they have gone busking around Metro Manila, playing for a cause.
They were able to raise funds for Supertyphoon Yolanda survivors in Palo, Leyte; children who survived the Zamboanga siege; families of the 44 Special Action Forces who were slain in the 2015 Mamasapano encounter; children with cancer at the National Children’s Hospital; indigenous children from Subic; and 20 scholars in Cavite.
With the help of Alagang Kapatid Foundation, Musikaramay will stage Musikaramay Basketball: 3×3 Para sa Marawi, a FIBA-endorsed basketball league, on November 6, Monday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Cuneta Astrodome to raise funds for internally displaced residents of Marawi City.
29 teams of 112 players – including personalities from the music industry – will play seven hours of community basketball in true bayanihan spirit.
The players will donating P1,000 each. Everyone is invited to watch and join the cause. Instead of traditional ticket-selling, guests are encouraged to give a P50 donation and two items of canned goods.
2. Donate to Alagang Kapatid.
The joint efforts of the MVP group, dubbed “Tulong Kapatid”, is supporting livelihood opportunities for the Marawi residents. According to Menchie Silvestre, the executive director of TV5’s corporate social responsibility arm Alagang Kapatid Foundation, they have already met with the Department of Science and Technology, which will provide training to residents and revive the culture of weaving.
Alagang Kapatid has also received a donation of P500,000 worth of smart boards and paint that residents can use in house reconstruction.
By the end of November, Alagang Kapatid aims to bring its Foton First Responder Truck to Marawi to serve cooked food for residents as they clean up and rebuild their homes. The truck also has a mini clinic to attend to minor injuries. Free cellphone charging will also be available on the truck.

Caritas Manila, the social services and development arm of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila, in partnership with Radyo Veritas 846, will hold Damay Kapanalig Marawi Telethon on Wednesday, November 8, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

According to Caritas Manila, the internally displaced persons, particularly in Malabang, Marawi, are in need of food, as well as hygiene kits (including anti-itch ointment for the children’s skin rashes), solar lamps (to address the electricity shortage), water filters, infant diapers, sanitary napkins, school uniforms and school supplies, makeshift beds, and tarpaulin or galvanized iron sheets to fix the leaky roofs of evacuation centers.
“There are still areas that need our support toward their full recovery,” said Caritas Manila executive director Rev. Fr. Anton Pascual.
“As Christmas is approaching, let us all spend this season in charity and volunteerism. Let us all not forget how the Holy Family sought help. Let us all be instruments of God’s mercy as shepherds to our brothers and sisters who are in need.”
As of September 30, Caritas Manila’s Damayan Program has sent PhP1 million in cash, 100 cavans of rice, and P735,000 worth of other relief assistance to residents.
The Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro and the Diocese of Iligan helped address the immediate needs of the families, such as food, water, shelter, hygiene, and clothing.
The Damayan Program distributed school bags and school supplies to 73 schools in Iligan, which houses over 5,100 displaced learners, and to 117 schools in Lanao del Norte, which houses over 5,700 displaced learners.
Caritas Manila is also working with the Missionaries of Jesus to provide psychosocial, livelihood, and relief support through the Damay Marawi program.
Through Damay Marawi, over 300 families in Lanao del Sur will benefit from such “multi-level interventions”. Child-friendly spaces, temporary shelters, and WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) facilities will also be put up.
In addition to this, Caritas Manila is sponsoring a medical mission as well as other livelihood programs.
