5.1 magnitude quake strikes off Cagayan, Sagada jolted by weaker temblor

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — (UPDATE – 1:20 p.m.) A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck near Calayan in Cagayan province while the popular tourist destination Sagada was jolted by a magnitude 4 tremor Wednesday morning.

The 6:08 a.m. tectonic quake in Cagayan, whose epicenter the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology placed at sea, 33 kilometers south of Calayan, was slightly felt in parts of Apayao province.

Intensity II was felt in Laoag City and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte and in Sinait, Ilocos Sur.

Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected.

The Sagada temblor, on the other hand, happened at 11:43 a.m. and was felt in some parts of Baguio City.
