MANILA – Engineer Cayamora Maute, father of the brothers leading the ISIS-inspired group that instigated the three-month-old Marawi siege, died Sunday night hours after being rushed to hospital from the BJMP facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City.

Maute, had been detained at the CBD since being arrested along with his wife in separate government operations weeks after sons Abdullah and Omar led hundreds in laying siege to Marawi on May 23.

He was already suffering various ailments – diabetes, hypertension and hepatitis – when moved to Taguig from Cagayan de Oro, according to radio reports.

About 3pm Sunday he was rushed from Camp Bagong Diwa to the Taguig-Pateros District Hospital, where he expired about 9pm, said the reports quoting the spokesman of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Senior Insp. Xavier Solda.

His body was taken to the Quiapo Golden Mosque where it lay in state briefly, before being brought to Norzagaray, Bulacan, for burial in simple rites according to Islamic tradition of burying the dead within 24 hours.

His body arrived at Barangay Minuyan, Norzagaray about a quarter to midnight, and was to be buried at the Himlayang Liwanag ng Kapayapaan, according to a DZRH report.

Cayamora and his wife were accused of abetting their sons’ involvement in terrorist campaigns.

The couple and their followers who were accused of involvement in the terror campaigns were brought to Metro Manila on petition of the Department of Justice, which asked the Supreme Court to order their trial heard in the NCR because the court and detention facilities in Cagayan de Oro were vulnerable to terrorist reprisals.
