The Department of Health (DOH) is closely monitoring the health status of seven persons who have manifested signs of being possibly infected by the H5N6 avian influenza virus.
There have been 34 other persons placed under observation, but these have already been cleared after due surveillance under medical supervision showed them to have yielded negative results.
According to the DOH, these persons being observed were either handlers of contaminated fowls or have come in contact with sick birds.
They exhibited the tell-tale symptoms of contracting fever, having upper respiratory infection (colds and coughing), pain in joints, general malaise, and experiencing diarrhea.
They are presently being kept in isolation at Jose B. Lingad Memorial Regional Hospital in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga.
Test results are expected to be issued over the next couple of days.
The two referral hospitals for avian flu cases in Central Luzon are Lingad Regional and Paulino Garcia Memorial and Research Medical Center in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija.
In the National Capital Region, the referral hospitals are San Lazaro Hospital and Lung Center of the Philippines.
