The outcome of a re-autopsy conducted at the prompting of the family on Monday disclosed that Kian Lloyd delos Santos died of three fatal gunshot wounds “that were meant to kill”.
The findings by the forensic team from the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) prompted the move by the family to file murder charges against police officers implicated in the incident.
The August 16 death of Delos Santos, a senior high school student, stirred outrage after witnesses and closed circuit television footage tended to indicate he was murdered in cold blood after a drug operation, and not in a shootout as police claimed. The gun authorities insisted he was armed with was suspected to have been planted.
The viewing at Kian’s wake was interrupted to make way for the four-hour autopsy by the forensic team from PAO.
In summary, the team observed that Kian died of three wounds: One bullet wound was at Kian’s back, while two other hits were to his left ear.
All hits were characterized as potentially fatal.
Chief Public Attorney Persida Rueda-Acosta said: “Nakakalungkot. Talagang magfa-file po ng murder [complaint] ang family kasi tatlong fatal wounds po ito – dalawa sa ulo at isa sa likod … ito ay gunshot wounds. So, tatlo pong fatal wounds ang nakita, at isa po ay treacherous wound (Sadly, the family will file a complaint for murder because there were three fatal wounds – two on the head and one at the back).”
Slugs recovered by neighbors from the scene were deemed vital to the investigation.
Heavy rainfall accompanied the outpouring of sympathy and indignation expressed by visitors to the wake.
Even as police denied that it was Kian recorded on closed circuit footage seen being forced outside by law enforcers, Acosta said: “Even though Kian can no longer speak, we have pictures and the autopsy findings. The wounds he suffered will tell the whole story.”
Kian’s grandfather, Tonyo, is doubly saddened that, on top of the family’s grief, come insinuations by the police about drug running accusations being leveled on them: “We will fight this wherever it may lead.”
