MANILA – Filipino students bagged 18 medals including four golds in four international math contests held in China to continue their winning streak abroad.

They won at the 2017 China Western Mathematical Invitation (CWMI) held from Aug. 11-16 in Sichuan; 16th China Girls Mathematical Olympiad (CGMO) from Aug. 10-15 in Chongqing; and the 14th China Southeast Mathematical Olympiad (CSMO) in Jiangxi and and China Northern Future Star Math Invitation (CNFSMI) in Changchun held recently.

The country’s medal haul consisted of 4 gold, 6 silver and 8 bronze medals, according to Dr. Isidro Aguilar, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG).

“Our young math wizards once again brought honor to the country by winning in these four contests. Their hard work and training paid off,” Aguilar said.
Contestants in the CGMO and CWMI came from the top high schools in 30 different provinces in China, and teams from Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Kazakhstan and the Philippines. The CWMI had a proof-based format similar to the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

Filipino contestants were accompanied by MTG coaches James Kelvin Martin and Quennie Sarabia-Flores.
