284 Central Luzon coops ‘delisted’

CLARK FREEPORT, Philippines — At least 284 multi-purpose cooperatives in Central Luzon have been delisted by the regional office of the Cooperative Development Authority for various violations.

Marietta Wang, CDA director for Region 3, said 72 of the delisted cooperatives have either been dissolved or voluntarily disbanded. “Maybe they are no longer interested in doing business as cooperative,” she said.

There are 2,633 registered cooperatives in the region, 35 of these in the large-scale cooperative billionaire and millionaire categories.

“A cooperative can be delisted due to major offenses. Just like what happened in Candaba, Pampanga where a farmers’ cooperative engaged in rice smuggling and another group (was) allegedly involved in the sale of permits,” Wang told reporters.

At the same time Wang, who guested at the Pampanga Press Club’s News@Hues forum at the Park Inn by Radison, said she is endorsing several cooperatives for the national search of outstanding cooperatives in October, which is Cooperative Month.

“We have cooperatives that would qualify for the national search, specifically the billionaires and millionaires categories,” she said.

The San Jose Del Monte Savings and Credit Cooperative and St. Martin of Tours Credit and Development Cooperatives were recently named the most outstanding cooperatives in Region 3 besting other group in the billionaire category.

The Bagong Barrio Multi-Purpose Cooperative and Mahori Multi-Purpose Cooperatives, on the other hand, were chosen outstanding millionaire category cooperatives in the region.

Named outstanding medium-scale cooperatives are the Limay Multi-Purpose Cooperatives, San Isidro-San Roque Credit Cooperative, and Sto. Niño de Parada Multi-Purpose Cooperative.

The Angeles City Cooperative Development Council, on the other hand, was cited in the Independent City level.
