MANILA, Philippines- The driver of a white Honda Brio died while his spouse and their three children were hurt after a cement truck crushed the car Tuesday afternoon in front of the headquarters of the Bureau of Jail and Management and Penology on Mindanao Avenue in Quezon City.
The fatality was identified as 34-year-old Ulysses Ramos, who was with his wife Marife Ramos, 35, and their children Ulariza Ramos, 12; Eugene Marcos Ramos, 8; and Enrico Mateo Ramos, 4.
The driver of the truck, identified as 27-year-old Jason Muleta, emerged unscathed from the incident. He said he had lost control of the brakes, forcing him to change direction. The truck then hit the road’s center island causing the cement mixer to tip over and squeeze the car, resulting in the gruesome crash.
“Tapak ako nang tapak ng preno, ayaw huminto. Kumabig ako sa kaliwa para sumampa sa island, pagsampa ko biglang tumaob ang mixer,” said Nuay.
The victims came from their residence in Novaliches and were supposed to go out and enjoy the day when the incident happened.
The first ones rescued were Marife and her children. Ulysses was already unconscious when rescuers came to his aid two hours later. He was declared dead at 7:32 p.m.
The truck driver surrendered to authorities and was brought to Quezon City Police District Station 6.
Police said Muleta would be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple injuries.
