MANILA, Philippines — Tropical cyclone warning signal No. 1 has been raised over Batanes province as “Gorio” intensified into a severe tropical storm and accelerated slightly as it continued moving northwest.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration is also monitoring a tropical depression over the West Philippine Sea, some 450 kilometers west of Calayan, Cagayan but outside the Philippine area of responsibility.

Pagasa said both Gorio and the second storm will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon. This means moderate to occasionally heavy rains over the western section of Luzon, including Metro Manila, and light to moderate rains over the rest of the island and the Visayas.

At 4 a.m. Friday, Gorio was tracked 545 kilometers east northeast of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan packing winds of 105 kilometers per hour near the center with gusts of up to 130 kph and moving northwest at 15 kph.

It is forecast to be 245 km northeast of Basco, Batanes Saturday morning and 380 km north northwest of there the day after.

Gorio is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility late Sunday or early Monday.

Local governments in Metro Manila and several Luzon provinces have suspended classes for the day.
