MANILA – The Department of Justice on Wednesday directed the National Bureau of Investigation to look into the stabbing incident inside the New Bilibid Prisons on Monday (July 10), which ended with one inmate dead.

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre also tasked NBI Director Dante Gierran to form a parallel fact-finding investigation team.

An inmate at the maximum security compound, Efren Ventura, was killed in the stabbing, which happened days after Aguirre revealed that the illegal drug trade is back at the national penitentiary. According to Aguirre, a few members of the police Special Action Force (SAF) who were detailed to the Muntinlupa prison were involved.

Aguirre, meanwhile, told the NBI to submit an initial investigation report as soon as possible.
