CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga – Three workers of the Hanjin Heavy Industries Company were seriously injured following an explosion that went off at the international maritime dangerous goods section of the shipyard at Barangay Cawag, Subic, Zambales Friday.

HHIC security officer Florante Ancheta identified the victims as Alvin Salvador, Noel Hilario, and Liendon Hanopol, all laborers posted at the shipyard.

Ancheta told authorities that sparks from grinding machines may have ignited the blast caused by accumulated fumes from paints and other chemicals stored at the vessel past 2 p.m. July 7.

“The victims were working when the explosion happened,” Ancheta indicated in a statement furnished to local police in Subic, Zambales.

The victims, Ancheta said, were rushed to Baypoint Hospital inside Subic Bay Freeport and are reported in stable condition.

Ancheta said the victims were thrown several meters away by the blast from their positions.

Police authorities are conducting post blast investigation to determine the cause of explosion as Hanjin vowed to support the victims for their medication and other financial needs.
