An oil tanker crashed and later exploded in Pakistan on Sunday, killing at least 123 people, government officials said.

The tanker overturned after trying to make a sharp turn in the city of Bahawalpur.

A large crowd of people gathered at the scene to collect fuel, leaked from the overturned tank on the track, when it suddenly caught fire and exploded, rescue workers said. They added that at least 80 people had been injured.

Geo TV reported Sunday the victims have extensive body burns, many of them in critical condition.

According to eyewitnesses, several people were smoking near the place where the fuel was spilled, which could cause a fire. The fire destroyed dozens of cars and motorcycles. At the moment, rescuers had managed to bring the fire under control.
