(UPDATE – 1:11 p.m.) Nine persons were killed and at least five more injured when a passenger van collided with a truck in Davao City early Wednesday morning.

The accident happened around 5 a.m. in Barangay Mahayag, Bunawan district.

Police said the van, which was traveling from Monkayo, Compostela Valley with 18 persons on board, overtook another vehicle and ran head-on into the truck, which was on its way to Kapalong, Davao del Norte.

Reacting to the incident, Vice Mayor Paolo Collision said on social media: “It seems that authorities have again faltered in their duties and obligations.”

He noted that when the speed limits were first enforced four years ago, casualties from traffic accidents were drastically reduced. However, he said, the accident rate has begun to rise again.
