Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre says he need not apologize for linking some legislators to an alleged and unsubstantiated plot to destabilize the government.

Senator Antonio Trillanes on Monday said that, instead of fixating on Facebook and internet trolls, Department of Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre ought to pay more attention to the real stuff that matters to his office.

Aguirre had whipped up a storm Wednesday last week when he claimed but could not substantiate his narrative that opposition politicians met with prominent clans in Marawi City before fighting broke out between government forces and extremists, insinuating that these events might be linked and part of a destabilization plot against the administration.

We’ll ask him to produce his alleged Facebook intel. We’ll see how he’s going to make himself the laughing stock of the nation,” Trillanes tells journalists.

Legislators raised a ruckus over that, demanding a public apology, especially Senator Bam Aquino, who was one of those fingered by Aguirre’s insinuation.

“I have nothing to apologize for. It’s not necessary; just a waste of time. Why don’t we just move on? We all make mistakes, if ever. We don’t need to blow this thing up,” Aguirre said.

Puro siya Facebook eh. Tigil-tigilan niya kaya yun at magtrabaho ng maayos sa DOJ (He’s full of Facebook. He should stop that and just do good work at DOJ). We’ll also ask him to produce his alleged Facebook intel. We’ll see how he’s going to make himself the laughing stock of the nation,” Trillanes told journalists.

For his part, Senator Bam Aquino said: “We have to know directly from him why he is subscribing to the narratives of fake news. If no less than a secretary of justice has problems of this sort, it ceases being just a problem of his office. It is a problem of the whole nation.”
