Having spent a “free day” to take it easy after arriving in Moscow after a long flight, in the wee hours of Tuesday, President Rodrigo Duterte is raring to tackle the nitty-gritty of the agenda in connection with his four-day official visit upon the invitation of his “idol”, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.

President Duterte was treated to simple but red carpet arrival honors.

The highlight of the visit will be his restricted one-on-one meeting with Putin.

Among the topics to be tackled will be defense and military cooperation, where the Philippines could consider procuring military assets from Russia, as well as the strengthening of economic and social ties.

Putin had previously hinted that there is the possibility of selling weapons and related materiel on “buy-one-take-one” basis, especially in the light of the potential curtailing of arms supplies from the United States of America due to conditionalities having to do with alleged summary killings attending the Duterte Administration’s war on drugs.

There will be a Philippine-Russian Forum for business, trade and tourism representatives, where a number of deals are expected to be put on the table for possible implementation as Russo-PH ties warm up further.

The present state of commercial exchange between the two countries is estimated to be worth some $226 million.

At the restricted meeting between Duterte and Putin, the relationship is expected to be enhanced after some four decades of diplomatic ties.
