MANILA, Philippines — The Sandiganbayan has allowed Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada to undergo a medical checkup for his aching shoulder.

In a one-page resolution, the anti-graft court gave the detained former senator the go signal to undergo medical procedures that would include magnetic resonance imaging and X-ray at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City, Metro Manila.

Estrada was allowed to leave at 12 noon on Thursday, May 18, and return to the Philippine National Police (PNP) detention facility at Camp Crame, in Quezon City at 6 p.m. the same day.

Estrada has been confined at Camp Crame since June 2014 for the “non-bailable” offense of plunder filed against him in connection with his alleged involvement in the pork barrel scam.

He allegedly channeled his priority development assistance fund to the “bogus” non-government organizations of businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles, from which he allegedly “pocketed” millions of pesos in “kickbacks”.

Napoles is the alleged “brains” behind the P10-billion pork barrel racket and the P900-million Malampaya Fund scam.
