Officials at La Mesa Reservoir in Quezon City, the principal source of water supply for the National Capital Region (NCR), have declared a Code Red status for the facility due to continually diminishing stocks.
La Mesa’s Headworks Management office disclosed that, at 2 o’clock Friday, the water level at the reservoir was recorded at 78.37 meters, more than 1 meter below what’s considered normal.
The gradual diminishing of the water level has been going on for nearly one month, prompting the declaration of Code Red.
Headworks Management indicated that the present rate of water level abatement is happening at a faster rate compared to the same season last year, attributing the phenomenon to greater consumption due possibly to a bigger population as well as higher rate of usage in commerce, industry and construction activity.
Officials of the National Water Resources Board, NWRB, pointed out, however, that La Mesa Reservoir functions partly like a waystation for water that comes from Angat Dam, which means that the supply from Angat, in Norsagaray, Bulacan Province, can be tweaked if needed.
Sevillo David, NWRB Executive Director, said there is sufficient water to supply the needs of NCR, as well as irrigation for Pampanga and Bulacan provinces beyond one more month, by which time the wet season would begin to set in.
