Closed circuit television surveillance footages record the last moments in the life of Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Insp.. Rommel Macatlang.

The police officer, who used to command the Pasig City branch of the Criminal Investigation and Detective Group, had just left a birthday party inside PNP General Headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City, and the CCTV footage captured motion images of a man on a motorcycle tailing his vehicle.

While on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue 9EDSA) after leaving Camp Crame, Macatlang’s car was overtaken by the motorcycle-riding man.

Apparently, yet another motorcycle, with two riders, was cued to resume the pursuit.

When they had reached Pasig City, Macatlang stopped to gas up at a petrol station.

This was where his pursuers approached and shot him at close range.

Macatlang succumbed to four gunshot wounds inflicted by a caliber .40 handgun.

According to Eastern Police District Director Chief Supt. Romulo Sapitula, the incident had all the markings of a professional hit job: “Bihasa talaga. May characteristic siya. Apat na shot puro fatal. Hindi gawain ng isang baguhan. Makita mo (It was characteristic of an expert job. Four shots, all of which could have been fatal. You could see that’s not the work of an amateur). But we are keenly looking at this as having to do with his law enforcement service. We are weighing all possible motives.”

Macatlang’s family is considering the possibility of offering a reward for information that could turn the case.
