Ogie Alcasid is remembered for a lot of things: as the singer-composer who gave us timeless hits such as “Nandito Ako” and “Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang;” as a comedian and television host who made us roll in laughter in shows like “Tropang Trumpo” and “Bubble Gang,” as well as a long list of comedy films; and as an exceptional performer who has showcased the world-class Filipino talent throughout his nearly three-decade career.

Ogie is also husband to Asia’s songbird Regine Velasquez and father to 5-year-old Nate, as well as to Leila and Sarah, his two daughters with ex-wife and former beauty queen Michelle Van Eimeren. The multi-awarded performer and composer will be turning 50 on Sunday, August 27, and one can only wonder if there is something he still aspires for given his many accomplishments.

He says he doesn’t miss starring in gag shows so much. “Ngayon I’m really focusing on my music. More on that, as far as my career is concerned.”

“Sa buhay, parang gusto ko pang makipag-swimming sa mga butanding, kaya lang maraming ayaw na, bawal na yata. But I love to see them from afar. Totoo ‘to, ha. Hindi ako nagbibiro.”

“I am just at the stage in my career where I don’t want to do too many things. I just wanna enjoy my kids. My 19-year-old is home now. I have a five-year-old who thinks he’s 32. And I have, of course, Sarah also, and I’m enjoying being a husband to my wife. My job is of course important, but ewan ko, parang secondary sa akin,” Ogie said in a media interview during the press conference for his birthday concert, “NakakaLokal.”

“NakakaLokal” is meant not just as a celebration of Ogie’s birthday. Proceeds of the concert will help fund the efforts of child-focused humanitarian organization World Vision and its advocacy campaign, “It Takes a World to End Sexual Exploitation Against Children.”

Ogie himself is a World Vision ambassador and child sponsor. The title of the show takes after Ogie’s latest album, which was released only last month.

Joining Ogie on stage are Angeline Quinto, Jaya, Kyla, Iñigo Pascual, Basti Artadi, Davey Langit, Erik Santos, Lara Maigue, Lovi Poe, Solenn Heusaff, Men and Music, Yeng Constantino and Ogie’s daughter, Leila Alcasid. Former World Vision sponsored child and tenor singer Richard Supat will also join Ogie for a song number.

The star –studded line-up is composed of Ogie’s friends.

“Nagtanong lang po kami kung sinong puwede, Wala pong pinilit. These are the people who immediately said yes. Wala naman kaming wish list. Yung mga gusto lang mag-contribute. We didn’t have a criteria whatsoever. They gave their talent and time willingly,” Ogie shared.

The repertoire for the concert is composed of mostly Ogie’s own masterpieces and other OPM hits, except for one song, which Ogie has prepared as a surprise for his audience.

Ogie admits that “NakakaLokal” is his way of showing his gratitude for all the blessings he has received and of paying it forward.

“I’m at a stage in my life where everything is about being grateful. I’m grateful for everything; from the moment I wake up, until I shut my eyes, I’m grateful. So yes, I would say that since I’ve also strengthened my relationship with Jesus, it’s all about service, it’s all about servitude. And giving back is part of that,” he said.

“NakakaLokal” happens tonight (August 25) at the Kia Theatre. Tickets are priced at P3,000 (VIP) P1,500 (Orchestra A), P1,000 (Orchestra B), P800 (Loge) and P500 (Balcony).
