Dua Lipa’s female empowerment anthem “New Rules” may be so 2017 but it continues to rule the internet in 2018.

Its music video released in July 2017 was named as the 100th YouTube video to hit 1 billion views.

“New Rules” is the seventh single from Lipa’s self-titled 2017 album.

According to Billboard.com, the music video of the upbeat and infectious track was filmed at The Confidante Maiami Beach, a hotel in Hyatt’s Unbound Collection.

The video was part of the campaign for Unbound Collection and cast women who played Lipa’s BFFs in uniform bathrobe and swimwear. It was choreographed by Teresa “Toogie” Barcelo who thought of having dance steps similar to flamingos which are also present in the video.

No wonder ingenious Filipinos joined the bandwagon and recreated the iconic and well-choreographed music video of the award-winning British-Albanian pop star.

With Lipa performing in Manila at a solo concert on Friday night, here’s a compilation of parody videos by young Filipinos who recreated “New Rules” and made their own versions viral.

Cheerleaders’ version

Just two months after the video’s release, a group of cheerleaders from St. Paul College-Pasig recreated it using the school as their setting and while wearing their uniforms.

It reached almost 4 million views as of posting time.

The group of friends behind the cover called themselves “Dua Flip” since doing flips is a breeze for these cheerleaders.

TRAIN law rules

Another remake that went viral was the version of senior Accountancy undergrads from Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

Instead of just recreating the production, their version stood out for altering the lyrics to the tune of “New Rules” to make Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion law understandable to the public.

It was posted by Debra Ann Ponce on Facebook in March 2018 and has since garnered over 730,000 views.

These students strategized the informative “TRAIN” rules video as part of the final requirement for their Tax 112 class.

Low-budget ‘New Rules’

While others created their own versions of “New Rules” in a unique manner, entertainment and user-generated website, 9GAG, featured a low-cost remake perfectly copied Lipa’s original video.

A group of College Engineering students of the University of the Philippines was lauded for its funny but “almost-original” version of “New Rules.”

They pulled off the parody video by shooting the scenes in a local resort and casting a combination of male and female students. They also managed to copy the costumes and set.

The parody video featured in 9Gag last April now has over 24 million views. It was originally posted by Jade Velasco of UP Gears and Pinions.

While these Filipino parodies continued to earn views and praises, Lipa’s original video persistently rules with over 1.4 billion views and 8.2 million likes on YouTube as of writing.

Lipa is set to hold a return concert at the Mall of Asia Arena on Friday.
