MANILA, Philippines — The Army accused communist rebels of killing a lumad leader in Alegria, Surigao del Norte on Friday, the second slain after attending a recent indigenous peoples’ summit that was graced by President Rodrigo Duterte in Davao City.

Dakula Guillermo Tiambong, 58, was allegedly gunned down in front of his family as he tended his farm in Barangay Camp Edward around 2:30 p.m. Friday, 2nd Lieutenant Jonel Castillo, civil-military operations officer of the 30th Infantry Battalion, said in a statement.

The victim was the Indigenous People’s Mandatory Representative of the Mamanwa in Alegria.

His death follows that of Datu Banadjao Mampaundag of the Langilang-Manobo and his son, Jhonard, who were killed in their home in Barangay Palma Gil, Talaingod, Davao del Norte on Sunday by what the military claimed were New People’s Army guerrillas.
